| This sermon is about how Paul taught his spiritual son, Timothy. Pastor Cliffe also gives examples about how Nancy Lincoln trained her son, Abe Lincoln, moral absolutes from the Bible.
Paul taught Timothy to:
- have simple, sincere faith
- have unshakeable conviction
- love people
- have a healthy skepticism about our own sinful nature
- preserve, to have a self-discipline in pursuit of righteousness, grace, love and peace and to be a man of conviction
Simple, sincere faith involves … (this part needs to be developed)
Unshakeable conviction (see II Timothy 3:16-17) is a spirit of power, love and self-discipline without being ashamed.

Loving people means serving people (II Timothy 1:7); done with a decision to put the well-being of other people above our own well-being. Love keeps on going, even when rejected and spurned.
Paul also taught Timothy to have a healthy skepticism about the sinful nature that he, like all humans, has. He told him to “flee from evil desires of youth” (II Timothy 2:22).
Finally, Paul taught Timothy to have a “spirit of love, self discipline” to work hard and be a man of conviction, to stand strong on the non-negotiables.
Pastor Cliffe ended the sermon with the reminder that the main message of the New Testament is about reconciliation and that many of us need to be reconciled to our families. We need to come home. Some of us need to come home … to our wives, to our parents and to our children. Life is too short to allow bitterness to keep us separate.
