"Grace and Truth"

February 15, 2004
Pastor Cliffe Knechtle (34:54)

John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father full of grace and truth.” Jesus Christ revealed both God’s grace and truth together. We need God’s grace because we are broken people as a result of choosing to rebel against God. God’s grace runs through our lives bringing forgiveness, changing us from the inside out, and putting the broken pieces of our lives back together again.

Colossians 2:6-10: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.” In this passage, Paul addresses false philosophies and false teachings which, in that day, involved having secret knowledge, being part of the intellectual elite and believing that the real problem in life is not willful sin but instead ignorance. Such philosophies taught that if you can’t prove something scientifically, it doesn’t exist and is not true. They also teach that being a good Christian is merely keeping good ethical principles. In this sermon, Cliffe describes some history of the early church, the background of how the Gospels were chosen and the problem with the premises of the book “The DaVinci Code.”

We are not called to dead rituals or mindless rule-keeping. Faith in Christ is so much more than following ethical and moral principles; it involves being spiritually alive and connected to Christ. Christ wants to melt us and draw us by His grace and Holy Spirit into a deep spiritual relationship with Him. Are we responding to the grace of God by loving Christ and by growing closer to him? Are we responding to the truth of God by holding strong to Him and the truth that He has revealed? We need to pray for humility and insight; that God will open our spiritual eyes and that we will have a willingness to study the issues for ourselves. We need to strive to explore the depths of God’s grace and truth as revealed in Jesus Christ.
